Nighttime traffic from State Highway 1 will be diverted around Tamahere south of Hamilton next week for connection work for the Hamilton section of the Waikato Freeway, which opens in July.

Night closures and diversions are on Monday and Tuesday May 30 and 31 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with a weather hazard from Wednesday June 1.

The closure is to complete some of the final surfacing, signage, line markings and barrier removal, transport agency Waka Kotahi NZ said.

Detour routes include the national road network SH26 and SH1B and the wider roads SH2/27, SH3 and SH21.

Access to local property will be maintained beyond the detour cordons, including to Newell Rd from the north and SH21-Airport Rd from the south. All traffic will be diverted from SH1 at Hillcrest Roundabout SH26 and Interchange SH21.

Any date changes will be posted on the expressway’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/waikatoexpressway

As the work is weather dependent, if it cannot take place next week, the next available window is June 7-10.

Also next week, there will be a southbound closure on the Ngāruawāhia section, between Taupiri and Horotiu, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., on Tuesday June 2 for the removal of barriers and other work related to the completion of the adjacent section of Hamilton.

The detour is via Great South Rd, Ngāruawāhia.
