Nighttime traffic from State Highway 1 will be diverted in Tamahere during the first two weeks of May as work continues on the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway.
May 1 to 6: SH1-Tamahere, complete closure north and south between the SH26-Hillcrest roundabout and the SH21-Tamahere interchange, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Detours from the north are via SH26 and SH1B to Cambridge, and from the south are SH21 and SH3. Access to local property will be maintained at all times.
May 8 to 13: Closing towards the south of Tamahere, timetables and detours as above.
The closures are needed for roadway construction and line marking leading to project completion mid-year and will likely be the last necessary detours.
Work in May will see traffic separated from the current shared Cambridge Road Bridge and run on the final alignment.
Access to local property will be maintained beyond the detour cordons, including to Newell Road from the north and SH21-Airport Road from the south. All traffic will be diverted from SH1 at Hillcrest Roundabout SH26 and Interchange SH21.
Transport agency Waka Kotahi NZ says closures are subject to weather conditions and any resourcing issues related to Covid.
Any date changes will be posted on the expressway’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/waikatoexpressway
Waka Kotahi also reminds drivers that SH1B east of Hamilton (Puketaha) is closed at the south end of Telephone Road, with detours to avoid damage to the crossing. The detour is via Holland Road, Waverley Road and Seddon Road.
