Dunmore, Pennsylvania – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to an open house regarding the proposed State Route 11, Section 350 Bridge. The open house will be held at the Wyoming Area Secondary Center Auditorium, 252 Memorial Street, Exeter PA on Wednesday, May 4, 2022, 6-8 p.m. A presentation is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The proposed project involves the rehabilitation or replacement of the Route 11 (Exeter Avenue) bridge over Route 2037 (Kennedy Boulevard), the Susquehanna River, and the Luzerne and Susquehanna Railroad in Pittston and West Pittston, Luzerne County . In addition, Luzerne County is considering entering into a “bridge consolidation” agreement with the department to include the county-owned Fire Department (Water Street) Memorial Bridge over the Susquehanna River and the Luzerne and Susquehanna Railroad as part of of the overall project.
Both bridges are historic and therefore a rehabilitation analysis was carried out to determine if the bridges can be rehabilitated to meet the needs of the community / road network and if the rehabilitation can be carried out in a way that meets the Secretary of the Interior (SOI) Standards.
Along with rehabilitating or replacing bridges, the project aims to address traffic congestion and commercial truck movements on both sides of the river. Several intersections, including the intersections immediately at the end of the two bridges, are currently operating with poor levels of service, contributing to increased congestion. Additionally, even before the Water Street Bridge was closed, it was loaded and commercial trucks and most emergency response vehicles were restricted to using the Fort Jenkins Bridge. Since the closure of the Water Street Bridge, the additional traffic forced to the Fort Jenkins Bridge has exacerbated congestion in the transportation system.
The purpose of the public meeting is to present the project and receive public comments on the proposed improvements.
The public is encouraged to review additional information and complete the public questionnaire located on our website: Proposed SR 11 Bridge over the Susquehanna River and Water Street Bridge (pa.gov).
