metro: Metro delay: only 1 new section could be operational this year | Bangalore News

BENGALURU: Namma Metro’s Phase 2 project, which has missed several deadlines in the past, is expected to slow down further.
According to sources, only one metro section – 2 km Kengeri-Challaghatta section (purple line extension) – will be put into operation this year. Even this section, which was previously expected to be ready in March 2022, will now only be completed in December.

While BMRCL maintains that the Whitefield Metro (15km Byappanahalli – Whitefield, purple line) will be operational by December 2022, sources have said it is unlikely to be ready until March 2023. “Civil works between KR Puram and Byappanahalli are on standby. South Western Railway insisted on open web girders instead of composite girders for the rail crossing at Benniganahalli which delayed the work,” a source said.
BMRCL had previously planned to open four sections: Kengeri-Challaghatta, Whitefield Metro, Electronics City Metro and BIEC Metro by December 2022.
Sources added that BMRCL planned to complete all works including the traction and signaling system between Whitefield and KR Puram at the earliest. The contractor has been ordered to complete the civil works by October.
“The open web beam is expected to come from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh by June. But shortages and rising prices of construction materials like steel due to the Russian-Ukrainian war have affected work in many sectors. But we are still working to meet the December deadline for Whitefield Metro. However, it looks difficult,” a source said.
The original deadline for the entire Whitefield Metro was December 2020. Electronics City Metro (19km RV Road-Bommasandra, Yellow Line) is also delayed. This line will be put into operation in several phases: the Bommasandra to Central Silk Board section will be operational by May 2023, the remaining section (Central Silk Board-RV Road) will not be completed until December 2023.
The northern extension of the fully elevated 3km Green Line from Nagasandra to the Bangalore International Exhibition Center (BIEC), which was expected to be operational in mid-2019, will not be ready until June 2023.
Work on ORR lines
Similarly, the 21km Pink Line Kalena Agrahara (Gottigere) Station on Bannerghatta Road to the south with Nagawara Station on Outer Ring Road (ORR) will not be completed until 2024. Central Silk Board – KR Puram (ORR) – Kempegowda International Airport (Blue Line) will be ready by March 2025.
Naveen Prasanna, a rail enthusiast, said: “Given the physical progress, it was expected. Along with Kengeri-Challaghatta section, BMRCL may also open Manjunathnagar and Chikkabidarakallu (Jindal) stations of BIEC metro and BIEC station may be completed later. BMRCL should propose realistic deadlines and ensure that the work is completed before him.
