The house fire is just east of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church and across from St. Paul’s Catholic Elementary School on nearby Oak Street.

The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington District School Board says buses, students and staff were able to arrive at school safely on Tuesday morning.

Due to smoke in the surrounding area, the school is currently in “shelter-in-place” – the security response used when an environmental or weather situation keeps occupants in the school.

“Otherwise it’s business as usual,” said Galen Eagle, board communications manager.

“The school principal will be monitoring the situation closely, but at this time there does not appear to be a risk to the school and the fire services are on the scene across the street to manage the situation.”
